I've been thinking about fostering for Ratbone Rescues because there are so few foster homes in Georgia.  I'm not sure how Mikey would handle it though.  He is very jealous of Alice and we've had her now for 6 mos.  He is very possessive of me and when they are both on the sofa with me he gets upset if I pay attention to her.  (I know he's spoiled rotten.)  I don't want to do anything to upset him.  He is almost 6 yrs. old and very set in his ways.  For those of you who have done this before, how did your dogs react to it?

I really don't think my husband will go for it anyway.....

Hee hee, you know I couldn't resist posting. Being the foster mom and mom to 6 ratties total I run into this all the time. We all use something called NILF = Nothing in life is free. Which means make the rattie/dog work for everything you give them. From the food they eat to the affection you give. I always say training this time of situation is harder on the human than the dog. They want to work for things, its their job!

I'm a BIG Dog Whisperer fan and Cesar does many pack walks to bring the dogs together. If you have had the 6yr old on his own for a long time it will take time to adjust, but the human can help speed this up by their actions. If he guards the couch or you he needs to be instructed to get off the couch and down on the floor like the other dog. Also obedience training together or while the other watches is great too. This helps the dog to see who is in charge.

I'll email you off chat as well.

Thanks for posting this!

Is it Terry who is Georgia's Coordinator? I just love her. She would be so much fun to work with.

I wish I could foster. Difficult to see them go but such a great way to help with rescue dogs. I live in a small one bedroom apt. and can't foster.

Paula, I like your NILF saying.

Dawn,

I was just announced as Coordinator today. I work very closely with Terry. She is 110% great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is a great mentor.

There are so many other ways to assist if you cannot foster so don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks for the post.

Maybe some day I will come back to rescue as home visit coordinator. I loved it but with my hectic work schedule my husband was on my case every minute I spent on the computer at home.

I used to do everything from work. Now I'm too busy.

Thanks Paula!

Aww you gals are so sweet. You two are pretty great yourself!

I think I am spoiled to have Terry so close and to show me the way.

In regards to fostering, I had to work on my hubby for about 6 months. First, you are always nice and never nagging. Let them do as they please within reason. Second, cook their favorite meal or whatever they want and then discuss the topic. Third, say "Let's just try one. I think we'd be really good at it." Or something like that.

So with all that said it equals = Good Mood + Happy Tummy + Stroke their ego = Fostering LOL

Well that is how it works at my house. I do the brunt of the work regarding Fostering so he doesn't have to do much, but when I ask.

Hi Vickie,

I fostered a few dogs here for ratbone, and I am taking a break for now,  with schooling full time and working part time and the list can go on.

I worked on my husband too, because it was something i really wanted to try..... and i'll have to say, it probably took me about 6-8 months to get him to "okay" it....  and he also made his point clear to me....  "just one dog at a time!"......   So i said okay, and got right on the application to foster.

It is challenging and rewarding....  and time consuming....happiness and sadness....  but those dogs deserves a chance!!   sometimes i wish there were more hours in the day so i can still foster ......   but I am hoping to get back into it again when i have more time....

but anyways, why not and try one and see what happens......

hope this helps~!

oh and yes,  Congrats paula!!  and Terry is such a sweet lady.... she's the one that called me about adopting Kasey and fostering...  she is such a sweet person!!  If i had any questions, even hard questions,  she answers right away....  I am so glad that ratbones has her!

I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Terry in person last summer Let me just say that some folks know how to talk on the internet and on the phone. SHE is one of them.

Let me also say that even though I do not foster or never have it is important to crate train and give the dogs some training. THAT to me is the KEY to issues that may have put the dog in the situation that is in now.

We need to Train our dogs to be obedient. Difficult for me.. That way if something happens to us we have to trust them on their own. They need to be good looking and well trained pups to make it in this world.

And HOW about us. We need the same training. HOw many times do I get cut off on the highway or called by some spammer and treated like a complete idiot. You need to be trained on how to be well behaved and there=fore loved.

How about it? Did I cause an issue? I'm listening to Bruce Springsteen, Kitty's Back. Check it out.

Old BAG.

Dawn,

We humans are the ones that are hard to train! I have been trying to teach my own as well as the fosters to "get down" when they are jumping up on us or on the couch and need to get down. I say "down" for them to lay down as a command and want to say "Off" for getting off a human, couch or bed. I keep saying the wrong thing and confusing the dogs!

I could go on for awhile on how my dogs are better trained than me!!

- - - - - - --

You got to meet Terry!! Were you at a Jamboree? She and I are rooming together this year with whatever ratties we have at the time. We are both talkers on email and phone so you can imagine what it is like when we are together.

If you get to come this way again Dawn we have to meet too!!

Thanks to everyone who posted about fostering and training. It can be a hard job to do both, but the rewards are well worth it in my opinion. Life sure stays interesting!

Thanks again!

no no no. She was in SD for a personal reason and I made sure I was bugging her enough to make her meet me. We went to Old Town for Dinner.

So you come here ok? I don't think I 'll be doing Georgia in anytime near. Would LOVE to, but don't see it in my future. My only trips to GA were driving through to Florida from Chicago when I lived there.
