I was just given Chester, he is about 1 1/2, and not nuetered. The Lady who gave him to us lived up the street from us and couldn't take him with her when she moved. We have had him since 5/23/08. He seems to be a great dog, he gets along with my Hound-Pit mix very well, and my kids (5&7) love him to death...I am having a problem with him pooping in my den and laundry room. He is frightened of my back yard...not sure why...and I walk him 5-6 times a day. Any advice would be greatly welcomed!!!!

| maybe try having him use a puppy pads? was the lady nice to him did she kick him outside alot to the backyard? maybe you should try going out to the backyard with him and playing with him showing him it is not scary. new surroundings all can be a little scary for any one or any fur baby. give it time |

| You need to start over with him like he is a completely untrained pup. That's how I handle new foster dogs. Check the potty training threads in this forum for LOTS of great info. |

Give the Training Forum a check and there might be something useful there.
You might go out in your back yard with him and tell him "go potty" and praise him when he does.
He is probly just getting settled into his new home. |

he's probably having a hard time ajusting to the new home, and possibly a bit overwhelmed with more activity around him (kids) than he's used to. like gwacie said, you're probably going to have to treat him like a new puppy, and re-do all the training that any pup would normally get. you don't know what he was (or wasn't) taught before you got him a few days ago.

| welcome! there is TONS of good housetraining advice on the training forum...it should be a topic that is pinned to the top. Good luck, you will get lots of suggestions here....cant wait to see pics! |

| The good news is that if you are really vigilant about his retraining, and if he was house trained before, he will "get it" pretty quickly. If you are not vigilant, however he will learn (also quickly) that potty in the house works just fine. |

| Welcome! Just pondering...Is the hound/pit mix a back yard dog? Even though he gets along well with this dog, he may be reluctant to poop where he considers it to belong to the other dog, especially if he seems to be a submissive dog. I also encourage you to neuter. When he gets a little more settled in. He's only been with you about a week now, right? He may just not know exactly "where" he is supposed to go. |

Listen...if he's anything like Dashiell the puppy pads won't work. I sort of give him a pass on that stuff because he spends all day alone. But he is so smart...he will try and wait for me to take him outside without me scolding him at all for going inside. He goes inside because he can't hold it for as long as I am gone...but he tries. I think he does a good job of it. These ratties are so freaking smart they will practically read your mind. This probably doesn't help at all but I've been off the web and away from the site for a while and I'm putting my two cents in all over.

Well...Chester is settleing in well. He still won't Poo outside. My other dog is an INSIDE baby, I think its wrong to have "OUTSIDE" dogs. The boys are still getting along great, the kids have sooo much fun playing with Chester, as Sampson is a little on the lazy side. I just don't know what else to do, I have tried some of the tips in the potty training forum. My Hubby does not agree with crates, No matter how much I insist. For now I just pray he will figure it out.
He will be Nuetered VERY soon!!!!!
