How can I get my youngest son (18 years old) to understand not to hover over Bob or lunge at him to pick him up.  Bob will cower or try to run away from him.  I know it is because the posture that Travis is in is very intimidating to a dog...standing up and bending over with arms out.

I'm about ready to hit him in the head with one of my iron skillets to get him to listen to me.  He just thinks Bob is a big chicken and that I've ruined him.    I've tried to tell him to squat down a little bit away from Bob and call him to him nicely, but he won't do it.

Bob will come up to him and jump in his lap when he's sitting on the sofa, so he's not totally afraid of him.

Go ahead and hit him with the skillet? I don't know except to put your foot down....

I LOVE how Morgandy Ratbone sits, Mary Beth!!    My Benny Ben Ben sits like that too.

About the 18 year old - he's old enough to know better.  I vote for the skillet.........

At the age of 18.... he should "get it". It's not like he's a toddler....
Is he doing this just to aggravate Bob? Or is he truly trying to pick him up? NO dog prefers to be lunged at.
If he wants to pick Bob up, and Bob doesn't like his space invaded... train Bob to turn around to be picked up. This can be trained very easily... lure him around with a treat (include a verbal command such as "turn") until his backside is facing you... praise him... treat him... and pick him up. This is LOTS less intimidating to a dog.

Okay, should I give him a warning before hitting him with the skillet or take him by surprise? He's unfortunately at that stage where he knows everything and his parents are the stupidest human beings on the face of the earth.

Make sure you put a picture of Bob on the bottomside of the skillet that you use to smack him so that your son knows why he's getting smacked!

We have a saying here in Texas about somebody being so mean that "They need killing."  Not that my son needs killing, but he might need a little help getting it through his head not to treat Bob that way...and if an iron skillet helps, then so be it.

I think you should lunge at him arms out stretched and hit him with the skillet, then he will understand.

Poor Bob, everyone wants a part of his love!!

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too
