How frequently should I be giving Lilly a bath? What about trimming her nails? TIA!

I trim my RT's nails about every other week. I could do it more often, but I'm really afraid of clipping the quick.

As for bathing, the instructor of our obedience class told us not to bathe our dogs more than once a month, especially dogs that are prone to skin problems. She said bathing more often only exacerbates skin conditions. I'm not sure if that's really true, but my RT isn't a full-time outdoor dog, so once a month has been working for us.

To be honest, I've had my 4 dogs for at least 5 years each, and I don't think I've ever given any of them an official bath. I think at one point, I may have had them groomed while they were at the vets during the day but that's it. I may also have stuck them in the sink to wash 'em down or wiped them down with wipes, but luckily, my dogs aren't really that stinky! LOL... I think washing too much damages their skin (as it does ours)...

Ok thanks. Since she just got a bath today I imagine she won't need another for a few months. She really needs her nails clipped tho. I am afraid to do them myself.  Do you know how much it would cost to take her somewhere to get it done?

My vet only charges $10.00 - and that's when he charges...

I really don't want to have to make a trip to the vet just for them to clip her nails tho.

My girls get their nails trimmed about every 2-4 weeks (depending on how fast their growing) and they get baths just as frequently. Some ratties do have issues with dry skin, mine haven't evne when they get baths every 2 weeks. (i just like a clean dog) I'm careful about the shampoo I use on them and never use human products as they can contain many harmful ingredients.

A pet grooming place near my house charges $7 to trim nails - not much better than the vet.

Does anyone know if there's a site that has pictures and instructions on how to do it myself?

eHow.com has a video here.  Or do a search for "how to clip dog nails" and you will get tons of results.

Don't forget to use GoodSearch.com and type in Ratbone Rescues!
