Why is my 12 week old rattie humping her snuggly plush doggie? She has clearly done this twice now while playing with toys.

hehehe...my girl does it ALL THE TIME! I wouldnt worry about it unless she is trying to hump a human....
I have learned on this site that its often not a sexual thing but more of a dominance thing....I say, let her be dominant over a stinkin stuffed animal, as long as shes not trying to be dominant over YOU! it is kinda funny though!

Normal. If you don't like it ask her to stop (by ask I mean tell her no and redirect her behavior to something else). To be quite blunt, she does it because it feels good. She doesn't know it's not socially acceptable.

She's probably not exerting dominance at her age..but she might be.

LOL thanks for the video. I just thought it was really weird that a female was doing it.

I just laughed and snorted out loud when I watched that video, Mary! LOL

It's natural behavior, actually. Puppies in a litter hump each other constantly. It may be that they are learning early pieces of mating behavior. But they are also doing it for dominance. The puppy who can hump another puppy is dominant over that puppy. Puppies fight each other constantly to “be on top.”

Both male and female dogs hump in an attempt to assert dominance. When they don’t have littermates or other dogs, they often hump stuffed toys. Humping can also be play, rather than sexual or dominance behavior.

Train her not to do this by saying, “No!” and refusing to pay attention to her, and as Gwacie said... divert her attention to something else.

Of course, if it doesn't bother you ... you can always do nothing! LOL

I came tonight to inquire about female humping and here this was!!  Pixie humps our giant black lab, Sue, on occasion and I honestly didn't know why.  Dominance is such a logical answer, but since I've never had it happen, I didn't think of it.  Pixie is definitely still trying to take her place at the head of the pack, but its not happening.  Will she ever just give up?

At least all of your dogs have objects of  their "affection."  Our min pin used to air hump!  He sort of looked like the dog that was humping the whale (which was hilarious) at the end, when she got off the whale and was walking around still going at it.  He was much more..into it, though.

When I brought my Bonnie home last week, she tried to hump Chloe on the second night and I knew she was doing this as a dominance thing. Since Chloe is slightly older and my first, I simply told Bonnie "NO", diverted her attention, and that was the end of that.

Gotta say- the video of Trixie and the dolphin is hysterical!! But I'm glad we don't keep stuffed animals around because who knows what might happen at our place!

Yeah. Good video! Still laughing! My girls hump each other freely when one of them is in heat. Doesn't matter which one, they both do it but only then. I guess I never thought of it as a show of dominance and would think they would do it more often if that were the case! They both try to play the dominance card but the older, smarter sister seems to win - usually by completely ignoring little sis. I say as long as she doesn't start humping visitors, let her go! We all need to feel good sometimes =)

Young pups attempt to exert dominance all the time. They do it within litters, with playmates, etc. Dominance is not really an age thing.

That video really had me laughing though. Poor Trixie caught in the act

Hi, all. I haven't been to this site in ages, but popped in tonight with a question and found this thread.

We have a 2 year old female Rattie, Blue, who inexplicably has begun mounting our male cat in the last week or so. They are best friends, play all the time, and there is no aggression associated with it. I have to say it's the weirdest (and funniest!) thing I've ever seen Blue do. After reading this thread, I guess I shouldn't be too worried. It's just strange that it came seemingly out of nowhere.

We have thought about video taping it, because it's really hilarious. The cat just lays there and takes it (he's neutered and is the most mellow cat on the planet), while Blue has her way with him. But I just wanted to make sure it was nothing to be concerned about!

Thanks, in advance. I have gotten some great info and advice here in the past, but just haven't been around in a long time.

Sara
