A quick question about ticks. I think Sammy has a tick, but she is putting up a fit when I try to get it out  How can I tell if it is not just a black spot on her belly? How do I remove it with as little drama here as possible?

Are you sure it is not a nipple? Get a magnifying glass. Gert someone else to hold her. Ticks, are usually a dark brown color, not black. Unless they get engorged with blood, then they turn a tannish color. If it is a tick, grab it as close to the skin as possible, and twist it counter clockwise, til it lets go. Then make sure the long skinny mouth is still attached. Put a dab of alcohol, on the sopt after removel, then neosporin.

is there any way you can look at it without touching it? how long has it been there? has it gotten any bigger in that time? the area around it is usually irritated looking, so if she's putting up a fuss when you touch it, it probably is a tick...my great big male dobie jumped when I tried to remove a tick. I got this neat little tool at the pet store to remove ticks...it looks like a teaspoon with a v-shaped slit in it...removes the tick with the head still on, and it's pretty easy to do.

The Brown Dog Tick can sometimes look black, if they've just latched on. Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol, have a pair of tweesors (sp?) ready and if it's a tick, it will start backing out. Then drown the sucker in rubbing alcohol to kill it. I would put neosporin on your pup afterwards.

Thanks for the replies! I had to get mroe food too, so I asked our vet to take a look while we were there. It was a brown dog tick- luckily it came off pretty easily. With all the running around like a banchee at Turtle Creek it doesn't surprise me that she has gathered a tick.
