Long story short, this female showed up drinking water out of my ditch about 5 weeks ago. We live on a dirt road. We posted flyers, put an ad in the paper, took her to everyone up and down my road within 1 mile - nothing. No one claimed her. In the short time she has been here, my kids have become attatched to her. We also have a male chaweenie, and they get along great and play NON STOP.

My research tells me she is a rat terrier, but her head seems a bit blocky compared to the pics I see. I'm guessing she's a rattie due to her HIGH energy level. She's lightning fast, can jump as high as your chest, and can't sit still unless she is sleeping.

And, to top things off, she started her heat cycle on Friday. She is now in diapers. I didn't plan on keeping her, and certainly don't want to take her to the dog pound. She was still in the chewing stage when she showed up, and that has ended, and she is partially house broken. I'd like to keep her, as she is a friendly, entertaining dog.

So, here is Coco.

Welcome to the site She looks like a full blooded rattie to me. In general, I think most ratties have a "boxier" head shape than say a toy fox terrier, which have a pointier muzzle.

Have you considered taking her into the vet or animal shelter just to have her scanned for a microchip. Though it sounds as if she may have been dumped So glad you cared enough to take her in. Ratties are easy to fall in love with

If you keep her, I'd, of course, have her fixed as soon as you can.

We haven't been to the VET, but we plan to after she ends her heat cycle and will be getting her fixed.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that someone just dumped her off. For the first 2 weeks we had her, she chewed everything she could get ahold of, if someone wasn't watching her. We have now corrected that problem.

I also think she was mistreated by her former owner, 99% sure it was a male who mistreated her. Anytime I raise my voice, she get's very nervous and cowers. This has gotten better over the last few weeks though. She is getting more and more comfortable.

I think she is really cute. She looks rattie to me, with her size, ears and rounder eye shape. Sounds like she is fitting right into your "pack" as well. Welcome!

She's cute, looks maybe like a "tuxedo chocolate" if there is such a thing. Thanks for taking her in and putting the time into training her. Obviously someone else didn't want bothered. But these little dogs are so worth the effort!

She definitely has some rattie in her. When I first looked at the face I thought "Boston Terrier"... but maybe not? Hard to tell...
Doesn't matter. She's adorable and BLESS YOU for taking her in !

This heat cycle is really NUTS!

She has been in diapers for almost a week, and is still bleeding. Anytime we take a diaper off her and let her outside, she will lick herself nonstop for minutes. Our other dog is fixed, so no worries there. And, we haven't had any strange dogs show up..thank god.

I know what you mean...my dobie is in heat right now too...not fun. if your girl has only been bleeding for a week, you have about 2 more weeks to go.

welcome!
