Where do I begin......

Last night, Ricky and I came home from dinner to find a rattie pup leashed to our front door with a note. It was Oprah.   NOTE: Oprah is the little rattie I posted about a month or so ago whose owners were 18 and broke and she had a medical crisis that I had to help them deal with.

Ever since the whole ordeal with her health, I have tried several times to call her owners, but their phones were shut off. I tried looking for them at the apartment,  and a couple weeks ago I found out they had been evicted.  I wondered what was going on with Oprah and last night I found out. The poor baby looked so sad crying leashed to my door with a note on hr leash.

This is what the note said.

"Maggie, I am so sorry to do this to you, but we have no place for Oprah to go. My hubby lost his job and we lost the apartment, abd we are unable to care for Oprah or feed her or be good dog owners. I know this is the worst thing I could do to repay your kindness, but I couldn't bear the thought of her going to a shelter, and I know you will be able to do what is best for her. I love her very much, and wouldn't give her up if I knew I could give her the life she deserves. Please find someone to love her and be the owner I should have been for her."

I was freaking out, and I just really had no idea what to do. I was going to tell everyone this morning but today has been crazy. I hate when people give away their dogs, but my heart breaks for Oprah and her former owners. I hate that I got caught in the middle but, if its me caught in the middle or that baby in a shelter, I pick for me to have the burden.

She cried all last night until she laid next to Angus and fell asleep on him. She's the spitting image of him, so they looked so cute together. I was so worried that I was either going to have to keep her, or ask ratbone to intervene and just foster her until she found a home, but luckily none of that happenedbecause I found her a home and I brought her to meet her new owners this morning.

It was a lucky thing, and I know she will have a great life, I wanted to keep her, but now was not the time to add another rattie. OS this was a sad story that turned out good.

Thanks, It was crazy. I felt so bad for the girl who gave up oprah and for Oprah herself. You can tell that the girl was trying to do the right thing, you just don't ever come home and expect to find a four month old puppy ;eashed to your door.lol.

But Oprah went to a wonderful wonderful home, and I think it will all work out for the best.

One time I went to my dog shop a found a hamster in a cage on the door step but unfortunately the poor little fellow had past away I can not understand people leaving their pets alone I am so glad you found her before some one else did and at least you found her a wonderful home!!

wow....so sad but i guess in a weird way, she was being somewhat caring and responsible to give her to someone who knows and loves ratties...sheeesh, what a difficult situation...well, you gotta get her new owners to join now so we can keep up with her new happy life!!!

There's a difference between owners who give a dog away for frivolous reasons such as they want a puppy or just don't want to take them with them when they move, and dog owners who have to make the heart-breaking decision to give up a beloved pet because their financial or physical condition prevents them from taking adequate care of the dog. The first type are selfish and mean, the second type are responsible people who have had bad luck. Kudos to the former owners of Oprah for bending to reality even though it broke their hearts. I hope their lives improve soon.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

That is actually the really happy part of the story. The assistant apartment manager's in-laws are rattie lovers and former rattie owners. They lost their beloved rattie to old age a short time ago, and met Angus and fell in love with him. I gave them ratbones website and kept in touch sending them pics of Angus, but they still hadn;t made the move to bring in another rattie.. Well when Oprah landed on my doorstep, I called them, to just see if they would give it a chance. I started explaining that I had a little girl that looked like Henry, and started explaining the situation, before I could finish talking, they asked me when they could come get her. I had off yesterday, so I met them halfway, and they loved her the second they saw her. I'm so mad that I left my camera in New Orleans through this whole thing, I wanted some pics.

But it ended great, I actually didn't expect it to work out so well, but I guess everything happens for a reason. Oprah's former owners are good people, and I'm not sure how many 18 year olds would have made that decision.

Her former owners must have loved her a lot to not just dump her at a shelter. I wish them luck in the future. I'm glad that Oprah has a good home now and can help her new parents heal from the loss of Henry.
