07/03/2009 10:12 AM Fireworks and Sassy Advice?

Last fall I bought a house in a Cul-de-Sac..

My neighbors tell me that all the young people here in the circle party down and shoot off a couple thousand dollars of fireworks in the circle..

What is the best thing to give Sassy to keep her calm during all this?     She is gonna be a mess..

I know how she reacts to thunder and morter fire from Camp Atturbury and I know she ain't gonna deal with this very well...

thanks.

I know this isn't any advice at all. But can you take Sassy to someone else's house that isn't in the line of fire so to speak. Just maybe to lessen the impact?

I feel for all the doggies with the fireworks.

Lucky for us, we live in a veeerryyy quiet neighbourhood.

Layla usually this is a quiet neighborhood as well...
But the young people here do enjoy their youth..lol they get out in the circle and play corn hole etc...
I was young once so I don't gripe.. and the young people are pretty respectful...

Sorry hon, I don't have any advice on this at all. Mine hate the fireworks, particularly Rattagan. I just keep them inside if possible or if they are barking at the fireworks too much I let them into the back to raise cain. Maybe you can distract Sassy with a bully stick for a while?

You could try Rescue Remedy to maybe lessen the effects. The small bottle is about $10, give or take, and can be bought at a health food store.

You also may want to keep her closet ready for her.. if that's where she likes to hide. I'll either be taking my dogs with me, to try to desensitize them (Taylor went to the fireworks with me last year, and didn't care) or I will be leaving Abby at home with a covered crate with a big old momma-smelling blanket in it.

I unfortunately live about three blocks from where my city sets off their fireworks, and while it was ok and cool with Taylor 'cause I knew he wasn't afraid of them, I'm not so sure about Abby. We'll see how she handles the first few minutes (it helped Tay to be able to see the shinies 'cause I think he then thought he knew what caused the loud booms.) If she's not good with them like Taylor is, then I'll walk her back home and put her in her covered crate, and go back out with Taylor.

Maybe keep your TV a little louder than usual. Perhaps snuggle up on the couch with a thick blanket Sassy can snuggle under. The TV, air conditioner if you have it running, and blanket will muffle the sound somewhat.

Good Luck!

we have the same problem with Sonic.  the noise does not bother Syd or Buddy.  We turn the radio on and the tv for Sonic and it helps a bit.  he still shakes quite a bit.  our vet said to give him a bit of benedryl to calm him

Jan -- I usually take Lucy for a ride to get a treat or something when it's the heaviest time for fireworks. We stay gone about an hour. By then, she's missed most of the fireworks, and has had a nice treat and a nice ride just before bed time.

I agree -- can you go somewhere else for the evening? Avoiding the situation is probably better than trying to correct a situation.... and certainly better for Sassy!

Hi Jan
Could you have Sassy stay in a bathroom with the fan on. Maybe a radio too.
It's something that worked for my first dog during thunder and fireworks. His dreaded 2 noises.

Hendryx will be spending most of the night under the toilet tank. No way to change that. He may try to tough out distant thunder, but nearby fireworks and there's big brown puppy eyes peering up when you go for the flush handle. He curls up into the tightest ball that he can, his paws over his nose and mouth. He shakes, the tank rattles, and he just looks miserable. Only the quiet after show will finally get him out from under there.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

So far tonight she's been in the master bath laying on the rug..
There have been some distant fireworks around.
the worst will be tomorrow night..
Most of the people here in the circle put lawn chairs in their driveways and enjoy the show as I would like to as well, but worry about Sas too.
I think I will get something to give her... I have heard about Natures Remedy..
and turn the TV on in the bedroom and close the door...

Two nights ago, someone set off some fireworks and Luke starting shaking very badly. He ran all around as quickly as he could to get back in the house. We didn't have him last 4th... he didn't arrive until August. I was thinking about just giving him a Benedryl, but thought I would call the vet. She gave me 5 10mg. pills of Acepromazine. To give him 1/2 pill an hour before things start...

We started him on a 1/4 pill and an hour later, he needed the other quarter, that worked for him last night. We just gave him 1/2 pill a couple of mins. ago for tonight. It doesn't knock him out, just relaxes him. He was fine this morning, not grogy at all. We also have the windows shut and the cental a/c on with the TV turned on louder... and it's cool out with a nice breeze! The major fire works will start about 10 pm and last about 30 mins... all of the fireworks that were sold in town will be going on until at least midnight or whenever the beer is gone! I really wish they would ban fireworks here!

The rest of the pack is ok with the fireworks, they just bark a bit but it doesn't scare them like they do Luke!

Yeah, I'd like to know how she did too. Or did you end up even HAVING fireworks last night? It rained ALL DAY here in Greencastle, and our fireworks at the park were postponed until tonight, although some of the neighbors did shoot off firecrackers off and on throughout the night. Snoopy barked at them at first, but I don't think he was scared. In fact, he spent most of the evening cuddled up next to me on the couch snoozing!

On Saturday morning they had a dog costume contest at the park as part of the day's festivities. Snoopy went as Santa (that's the only costume I have for him). He didn't win, but we had fun!

Dogs have a way of worming their way under our skin and right into our hearts!

I had found stress tabs at WalMart and gave her some according to her weight..
They kept her from shaking and pacing and panting..
I put her in my bedroom and turned the TV on and closed the door.
She still laid in the bathroom on the rug but was much calmer.

It rained here all day too, the fireworks were postponed in Indy and here in Franklin till tonight as well.
but the cul-de-sac was rockin last night..
The families here had lots of company beer and food.
I sat in a chair just inside my garage..
And once they were over I came in and Sassy seemed fine.. a tad nervous but not as bad as she would have been without the pills.

Im glad it worked out for sassy, my uncles lab hates fireworks! he will have a panic attack if not given benadryl and taken to the basement with the washer running, tv and music going upstairs. then they turn the tv on in the basement and give him a lamb shank. pretty much a huge thing for them..... this was minnie's first fireworks show and we only live about about 4 blocks from were they set them off,so she was not impressed at all but we made her stay outside with us through half of it, if she got to bad we let her in. mostly we just distracted her with the frisbee. she wasn't to bad., sadie loves the fireworks, she sits in a chair or on hubbys lap and watchs them, not sure what she thinks they are. but she enjoys it. we go to the beach near sea world and watch the fireworks, when we visit family in san diego. minnie is the princess. she would rather stay home and be pampered, petted and eat a bully then go far from home.

good to hear she handled them well. Ivy and collie Jasper act like they could care less Forrest was a little nervous but remained calm for the most part I think it was because the others do so well. I did put the ratties in their crates with the tvs on, as the noise got really loud. My neighborhood sounded like World War III was started last night. So much for the ban on fireworks seems to me it has back fired and even more people are blowing stuff up just to protest the ban.

I've heard a few booms this afternoon. and have found her in the bathroom laying down..

She was not like this till the flood..
In the first place we lived, prior to Heart House, we could see the fire works from the Masonic Home from our back deck.. thats the main show here in Franklin. and I don't remember her being so freaked out.

Glad to hear she did so well. I wouldn't blame her if she was a basket case with everything after the flood.
