I recently brought home a puppy rat terrier. He's only 6 weeks, but he's already quite large. He has big paws and feet, and I'm just wondering if that's a sign that he's a Decker? I picked him from a litter of 8, and he was the largest.  Are there a lot of cases where 12-18 lb. rat terriers started off being large puppies with large hands and feet? I just wanted to get an idea of how big he would get. Thanks so much for your help, any information would be great!

His mom is around 18 lbs, and the dad was a smaller guy about 15 lbs. How does the Decker line work? Is it possible to get a Decker puppy, when the parents aren't large?

The Decker is a line of the Rat Terrier breed that can be larger. But a Standard Rat Terrier...that will finish about 18 pounds...or more...will still have pretty big feet to grow into.

The breeder that you got your puppy from...should be able to tell you what they guess the size of your pup would be at full maturity...based on what the parents are...and what they know about the parents heritage. IF your guy has Decker percentage in him...your breeder should be able to tell you that as well.

There are several of us breeders who have pedigree programs and we keep track of Decker percentages...if you have a pedigree on your little (big) guy...we can help you...contact me off line and maybe I can help you out... my e-mail addy is calishay at yahoo dot com (calishay @ yahoo . com - no spaces)

Also, how much does your little man weigh? There's a rule of thumb on weights also at 6 weeks...maybe we can give you some help there too...we just gotta know how much he weighs!

I adopted a puppy from a foster home that was listed in Petfinder as a Rat Terrier Mix. The foster mom had seen the parents of this puppy and felt certain that he was Full blooded and would end up weighing in at 15-18 lbs which is about average for a standard Decker. I brought him home at 7 weeks and he only weighed 4.5 lbs. Even the vet told me 18-20 lbs. Just before Christmas Amos weighed in at 46lbs!!!! He's a beautiful dog, but just a bit larger than I bargained for. I sent pictures of him to a local breeder who thinks he most likely has high percentage of Decker in him, but with no pedigree there is no way to be sure and it really doesn't matter because I had him neutered. He is way bigger than a pure bred Rattie. I feel like his daddy was most likely......a spotted pony that wandered into the yard. lol

I think that's too small to be considered Decker.  Decker's are usually 24+ lbs.  My girls are Deckers and weigh about 30 lbs each.  But again, it goes to the amount of Decker line that is in them that makes them Deckers.

Amos is a rare case...maybe part pointer?  They usually have the same markings as ratties.  Just a thought.  Although, there is a big rattie on ratbones, Paulie, that is 46 lbs...made me think of Amos.

Ooops My bad. I just reread this post and meant to say "15-18lbs is about average for a standard Rat Terrier". I really need to proof read what I type before I hit submit. And yes, Amos is a rare case. Most probably mixed and it could be ANYTHING he's mixed with, but I love his aggravatin' hide anyway.

My Eddie is what I call a Fat Terrier - related to Rat Terrier but really round. It's so hard to keep weight off that boy. The vet calls him an "easy keeper". Anyway he is 20lbs of tubby love and seems to have large paws and head. Maybe we should call them "mini Deckers". HA!
