HELPI don't know what to do!!  She's been doing so well out of her crate until the past couple of weeks.  First she started pulling the stuffing out of one of my pillows on the sofa.  Well my son called my husband yesterday to forewarn him that she had chewed a small hole in our sofa cushion on the back.  (It could have been a cushion on the bottom so I could turn it over!!)  I think I can sew it up so it won't be noticeable.  She'll be a year old next week....could she possibly be cutting more teeth??  I think she's bored and needs more exercise so I'm going to start taking her down to the field below our house in the evenings.  Do you think that's what it is?  I just wanted to get another opinion.  Thanks in advance for any advice

Toby is a little over one and he just chewed a hole on the top of my couch. He is just getting bored so he is confined to a small area again. The only advice is to make sure to exercise her. I know from what I have heard from this site is that in about a year or so the chewing behaivior should be about over.

I DID NOT  LOL!!

Exercise is the key, a tired dog is a good dog. Are you there to catch her chewing anything she is not supposed to be? Try to make yourself unseen by her but yet watch, when she starts to chew something she should not be give a firm NO and then replace it with a toy or chewie or somthing she can chew. You can also try bitterapple on your sofa or valuable and that may help discourage her too. I think you should see a difference with the exercise too. Good Luck!!

LOL  I can laugh about it today!!  Needless to say my husband is not very happy because the sofa is only a little over a year old.   I've got a question....what kind of toys and chewies do you give Fred and Alice?  It takes mine about 15 minutes to tear up a stuffed toy so I don't get them anymore.  Nylabones are OK but they manage to try to eat them.  She is definitely getting more exercise in the future.  They are soooo hard to get mad at!!!

At a year of age, I don't think she should be left with free run of the house. Is she crate trained?
Yes indeed exercise will help. She's bored...

Yes, I crate trained her from the beginning.  She was doing so well with it and got along with Mikey so I've been letting her stay out for probably 4-6 weeks now.  She's never done anything like this.  Minor chewing but she usually stays right with Mikey.  He's taught her alot but they have totally different personalities.  I wondered if I should confine her again but our house isn't that big and I close all the doors so she doesn't have access to any of the rooms with carpet.  That's why I think it may be boredom....Thanks for all your input.  I hope it's just a "stage" she's going through.

For chewies I buy them the mini dingos, and they get one a night while we eat dinner and if I need them to chew and stay busy bully sticks are the way to go.  Fred likes ropes the best for toys and Alice likes anything Fred has. . They destuff animals at the speed of light so I get them a couple a month just because they are fun.  My dogs are not big "rawhide" chewers but there are a couple in their toybox they will pull out now and then. Just anything that is for them. When your Alice chews replace it with something for her. No matter what it is. I think you will see a big difference in exercise. also work on some basic obedience, thinking tires them out too!!

Yes, exercise is key. Or try giving her something to keep her busy while she's in the house. Try getting a hollow, rubber toy, like a Kong, and filling it with treats. You can do they same thing with a destuffed toy. Bully Sticks can keep a rattie busy for a while too.
If you see her chewing on something, try telling her "no" or "ah ah" or whatever sound you use and give her a toy she's allowed to chew on or rip apart.

Dashiell has eaten everything in my apartment at one time or another...but he doesn't do it anymore. He seems to have grown out of it. I am now confident enough to leave things he would have eaten on the floor and he leaves them alone. Maybe it's an age thing.

I know this may sound draconian, but after our two ratties devoured a sofa and a loveseat, ( cushions, arms, backs, you name it) we invested in scat-mats. They learn quickly, and are well worth the expense. We have had new furniture for the past 18 months and no incidents. It's not that they keep getting zapped, ( lights on the power source indicate if and how many times the mats have gone off). They work on 9v batteries. When we go out, we put the mats on. Saves a whole lot of anxiety

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

What is a scat-mat and where do you get them?   I've never heard of them.  What do you do, put them on the sofa?  That sounds interesting....Thanks for advice everyone.  I've started crating her again per Nora's advice but she will be 1 year old Saturday and my other two rt's had the run of the house by the time they were that age.

Well, I have given up on having a holeless couch. They have chewed the end pillows, while I was gone for a few mths. I guess it was anxiety. They go into their crates when no one is home. They gets lots of stuff to chew on, but the couch is like a stuffed toy, "They gotta destuff it". There is also a bitter green apple spray you might try, on the spots she likes to chew. Maybe that would work.

My animals do not chew my furniture. New dogs (fosters/pups) are not left untended long enough to get into that kind of trouble. They are not left loose in the house when we are gone as that is too dangerous for them (terriers are very smart creative dogs - I've heard too many scary tales of dogs getting hurt, loose, or doing damage when they are left alone).

I would limit Alice to a doggie safe area when you are not home if you don't want to crate her. Mine are in the laundry room with lots of beds and room to move about but nothing to get into that can cause harm or trouble.
