Hello there.  I am brand new to this foruma nd have a problem!  We just adopted a 3 year old female rat terrier mix and we just adore her.  WEll, she has grown very attached to our 5 year old daughter.  Our resident dog is 11 years old and sweet as can be.  I guess our new dog did not agree and was kind of running at her and snapping a bit at her.  Today she really went after Bailey when the two of them were by our daughter and my daughter was playing with both of them.  She almost bit Bailey in the face.  What do I do??  I would hate to get rid of the new dog, but feel bad for our "old" dog..please help!

"old" dog is protecting your daughter from "new" dog? Is that right?
I think it will just take a lot of very careful, supervised, calm (not too much excitement) time with you, your daughter, and both dogs.

I agree with Lance..... also along with supervisions, teach your daughter to be the alpha of the pack...  just a thought....  that maybe the dogs feel like they have to "protect" their pack, but they need to learn and know that their human is their leader.   Does that make sense?  I have a 5 year old daughter too... well, she' will be in a couple of days... and her saying "no" doesn't seem to get the dog's attention, but a quick and stern "un uh" with her standing tall with her hands on her hips helps....  may help you and your daughter, but don't leave her alone with both of the dogs..... for both of their safety.  I'm sure others might have better suggestions/tips.

Oh, and have a water squirt bottle handy, that helps to correct the behavior....  not overnight... but squirt them when they are misbehaving at that moment, and say no. or un uh....  So when you see them act up, you can get them in the act with the squirt bottle.....   in time, i'm sure you will see a difference or an improvement....

and I wanted to say thank you for coming in to ask for help....   and Let me tell you, i'm still learning everyday too.

and Welcome to the site... there are plenty of tips under the training forums, and if you can't find anything else,  just post them in there and someone will offer tips and suggestions!

I agree with what Mardi said. The dogs need to understand that your daughter is above them in pecking order of the pack. I have 3 kids, ages 10, 6 & 4. I made sure Yaz understood that they rule over her. Mommy & Daddy, then kids, then Yaz. Give it time. They'll adjust with proper guidance. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you all so much for your replies. It is the new dog that is being difficult and trying to snap and bite the older resident dog. Just an update. they are finally kinda playing together in the backyard. The new dog(Rosie) is getting better each day, but still acting up and snapping at Bailey(old dog) when they are both in my daughter's bedroom. I will take the advice and once again, thanks a lot!!
