Subject: new terrier bit resident dog-what now?

Hi All! I had written about the new terrier and our resident dog not getting along about 5 days ago. Just when I thought things were getting better, Rosie(terrier)nipped Bailey(resident dog) above the eye. I adopted her froma shelter and they said she was great with other dogs and I just do not know how much time to give them to get along. it has only been a week, but we also have adaughter who loves Rosie and vise versa, but now we are nervous about her getting nipped as well. What advice can you all give me!

i guess it doesnt seem to be "playful nipping?" my two bite eachother, its a part of how they wrestle, they dont break the skin or bleed or yelp...but they play bite eachother ALL THE TIME...i guess this isnt what yours are doing huh?

It's hard to know from your description how serious it is. Terriers often play a bit rough and that can be a little scary to folks that are not used to it. There is a definite tone change between play and fight. Perhaps you can describe it a big more.

I think we need a little more info before we can give you some advice. How did your older dog react? What was going on before this happened? You mentioned in your other post that they get wound up when they are both in your daughter's bedroom...for the time being, I'd make her room off limits for both dogs, and see if that helps.

You all are great! Thanks for the advice. I honestly was not there when the nipping took place, but it is obviously a nip and whether it was playful or not i do not know. Rosie tend to kinda lunge after Bailey ifBailey get too close to her and I just feel bad for Bailey as she is 11 and we got Rosie so Bailey could have a friend! The thing is the foster mom said Rosie was great with other dogs, so I do not know what to think now. How much time should we give this behavior? Thanks for everything!

I had an older male (10 yrs old) when I first got the ratties. He let them know his limits from the very start, basically, no hyperness around him. We got the ratties so that our Rosie (dobie) would have a friend to play with and leave the old guy alone. If your older dog is trying to set limits with the rattie, then support it (as long as it's not aggressive), if not, then you will have to set those limits for her. What breed is your older dog? Sometimes, ratties are fearful of bigger dogs, and that fear can show as aggression...one of my ratties is that way. Generally, it can take a few weeks for the new dog to adjust to the new home. Maybe contact the foster mom, and get advice from her, since she (at this point) knows the rattie better than anyone else.

Hi all. To Tiggarat, the older dog is very scared of the rattie! She is 50 lb retreiver/beagle mix and the rattie is pretty nippy around our older dog. Our older dog looks at me like, please get rid of that mean nippy rattie! I will give it 2 more weeks and then I will see. Good idea to contact the foster mom though-thanks for the advice
