i know this probably sounds like a dumb question, but is there a considerable difference in the toy, miniature and standard size ratties? i mean, i know what the difference in weight is... i'm just more of a visual person  can you easily tell the difference?

standard 18-25 lb
mini 10-18 lb
toy under 10 lb

winnihoohoo put up a "sizes" post in the pictures, you can deffinately tell the difference between the decker and the miniature/toy sizes but there wasn't a very big difference in the mini and toy

ah found it, makes sence now lol i thought there was going to be a size chart or something but that works lol so i guess i will be getting a small standard or almost miniature most likely, im cool with that, originally i was planning on getting a toy rat terrier but then decided i didnt what that small of a dog. i think this will be perfect for me. i really dont want to turn into a person who dresses up my dog, but i would still like to get my dog like a rain jacket type thing, then maybe a hoodie or shirt or something, just becasue it gets cold at school and they have such short hair, but besides that i will just stick to a blinged out collar lol well once shes old enough for me to spend a little more on a nicer collar that she/he wont out grow lol

The Rat Terrier Club of America recognizes only two varieties of rat terriers, based solely on body height at the wither/top of the shoulder.

1.  Minature:  at least 10" in height, up to and including 13".

2. Standard: over 13", up to and including 19".

Before 12 months of age, both sizes will compete together. At 12 months of age there is a class division for both Miniature and Standard varieties. Dogs not measuring 10" inches of height at 12 months of age, or measuring over 19" inches are disqualified from the ring.

The American Rat Terrier Association lists the following:

The Rat Terrier is divided into two varieties for conformation exhibition: Miniature and Standard.

Miniature Variety: Not exceeding 13 inches, measured at the withers.

Standard Variety: Over 13 inches but not exceeding 18 inches, measured at the withers.

Weight will vary depending on the size of the individual dog. Rat Terriers are working terriers and should be presented in hard, muscular condition.

Faults: Height over 19 inches; obesity.

According to the American Kennel Club, which now lists the rat terrier in its FSS (Foundation Stock Service) uses the sizes as set above by the Rat Terrier Club of America.

The National Rat Terrier Association subscribes to the following standards:

Toys -  10lbs. or less (Tots under 5lbs.) Height - not to exceed 12 inches
Mini - over 10lbs up to 18lbs. Height - not to exceed 15 inches
Standard - over 18lbs up to 28lbs. Height - not to exceed 18 inches
(measured from the withers to the ground)

The "Decker" or "Giant" rat terrier is not the same as a standard rat terrier. Deckers are larger than the standard and is a result of a very specific bloodline and not based solely on the dog's size. A true "Decker" must carry the Decker genetics.

My Daisy is about 14" in height, and 14" "long", and about 15 lbs.

As you can see if you've read this far, it's all a matter of whose guidelines you choose to follow:

According to the RTCA and ARTA (and thus the UKC and AKC), there are only two types: minature and standard, based on height alone. At 14", my Daisy is a standard according to these organizations.

If I use the NRTA guidelines, Daisy is a mini rat terrier based on her weight of 15 lbs., and that she does not exceed 15" in height.

Only the NRTA recognized that the Type B or Teddy Roosevelt rat terriers are a separate and distinct breed in and of themselves. They are not included in the UKC or ACK breed standards that I am aware.

Same for the Decker/Giant ratties. They are discused by the NRTA with the following standards:

The Decker Strain can range in weigh from 22-40 pounds and their proportion is of a 10:10:9 Ratio.
Height - Females 16" - 17" inches, Males 16" - 19"  inches.

Thanks for the info Tracey.  I just posted a thing about Dink in the photo forum about sizes.  I have not measured Dink, I will when I get home.  He's a year old now and under 10 lbs.  That would make him a Toy right?  How do I measure him?

hehe yeah, i want to get some cute sweaters and stuff too, but i don't think nathan would "allow" me to dress her up at least with the sweaters i have an excuse

that's kinda weird that different organizations have different standards. the girl i'm getting my pup from says she's a mini but i don't know her weight/height.

At that weight, he is likely a toy rattie. To measure his height, measure from the ground to the top of his front "shoulder" see arrow on this picture:

Thank you Tracey ~ that's what I thought.  I'm going to measure him when I get home.

Ashley ~ I put sweaters & shirts on Dink in the wintertime b/c it can get real cold.  I do have one of him in a raincoat that I post in the photos forum a while back.  My son and hubby hate that I do that but oh well!!

Dink is so cute. I love his shirt I really rarely dress Daisy. Occasionally for a photo shoot, but like you, sometimes in the winter she must have a sweater on if we'll be outside for awhile or she'll shiver like crazy.

Mayfly is registered to the UKC but I can't find her papers to see if it says "Teddy Roosevelt Terrier" or Rat Terrier on them. She IS a Teddy Roosevelt though.

Ok...well by those guidelines, Miss Sally (aka Leapin Lily) would be a standard Rattie. She is approx (cuz she wiggles too much) 16.5" tall and weights approx (again cuz she wiggles) 23 pounds. Maybe she weighs too much? I know she's gained some weight since we adopted her...she was about 15 pounds and her little ribs were very prominent. Not so much now tho, but you can still feel them.
