Next week I will be adopting a rattie for the first time.

I have no experience with the breed,  but I have researched them and know that they will fit into our home environment perfectly.

I do have one question. I run up to ten miles every day, so would the be a good running companion?

Just wanted to know...

Also, do they get along well with other pets? We have a Lhasa Apso that is just over a year old.

Thank You!

I can say that yes they make great runners.  Mine will play play play play run run play run run and look at me like "you're tired, really?"

10 miles I am not sure, may depend on the age. I would get vet's approval as well but they definately have the energy for it!!

You will love this breed, hope to see some pics and good luck!!

Boy can my ZooZoo run. She would have to be conditioned to run 10 miles but we do 2 miles a day.

I agree with Val, it would depend on the age. A very young puppy or an older dog might not be able to run that far. But in general they have lots of energy and love to run and play.

I agree with everyone about the age. I'd have a vet look her over as well to rule out any physical problem that might prevent her from running with you. And, I would suppose that it might be a good idea to work up to the 10 miles by starting out with shorter distances first.

Where are you adopting her from and how old is she? Got any pics yet?

My mom takes pretty long walks...too long for her young pup...she will rearrange her walk so that sometime during it, she passes the house...drops the pup off and finishes her exercise...or starts her walk, gets the pup sometime during the walk and then the pup finishes the walk with her! that may be an option if 10 miles ends up being too much!

I know as far as 'running around' these dogs as FAST as heck or at least Dink is...I bet he's as fast as any Greyhound!!!!  As far as long distance running, I'd go with what everyone else is saying about checking with the vet.  I know when I take Dink on our bike trail (biking) I let him run some and then I let him ride b/c I don't want to hurt him by having him run too far per se.

WELCOME!!

I agree that it could depend on the age, but maybe also on the personality of the particular rattie too. I have 2-one who would probably love for me to be a runner but unfortunately for her, that's never going to happen! She has so much drive and energy I got a second rattie just to help keep up with her energy level!! She LOVES to run, but I don't know that she'd be able to do 10 miles a day. (and I'll never know either- lol!) My other rattie on the other hand, isn't really into running much. She'll chase after Chloe for 20 yards and then stops or slows to a walk. She'd probably be a great relay runner or sprinter! She is a bit younger than Chloe and not as physically fit as Chloe, but even if she was, I honestly don't think running is her "thing"- she takes after her mom! LOL!!!

LOL totally agree, we walk and sometimes that's a stuggle for me!! It's not that I am totally out of shape or lazy but running, not me.

Val, Chloe has run after joggers/runners as they've passed us before and when I call her back to me she looks sad - like "can't I go with them and run like that?" I wish, for her, I ran, but seriously, it NEVER going to happen!! She'll just have to be content trying to get Bonnie to chase after her, and getting to run off leash every day! My poor baby.

Ratties are pretty good runners. CoCo and I run between 3 and 5 miles a couple times a week, but we have been running since she wasa baby, so she's built up to the five miles. She does great with it, and loves it. Angus, my younger rattie, really isn't good for anything over a mile, he gets to distracted and wants to play, so either we take him on shorter ones and drop him off or I only take Co with me. But yeah, after a vet check, I would say run with your rattie

Welcome! Everyone else did a great job covering the running part of your question. My ratties absolutely adore my dobie, and my brother's min pin. If you are worried about how the 2 dogs will be when they meet, you should introduce them on nuetral ground, like a park.

Can a rattie run... Well my Shadow is a runner. He just takes off running sometimes in circles through the kitchen and round the living and dining rooms. It is like a circle and he runs and runs. I get a laugh out of that cause he is so fast and sometimes forgets to put on the braikes. They have super energy too. They get along okay with other pets. My Shadow is forced to live with 2 cats, one is okay and the other he isn't but she hides from him all the time. Dogs, well they are perfect playmates. I take Shadow to the dog park and he thinks he is a big dog and just plays with them all.

Welcome to the site.

They don't only run like the wind, but they jump like kangaroos and hop like rabbits and prance like ponys--at least nora does--the love to move in many different ways

I personally think 10 miles would be too long. Blue does good for a couple of miles, but he likes to take a nap after that. GOOD LUCK! Maybe you could work your way up to 10 miles.

I am certain that my Vino could run that far after some conditioning. Again, I agree with checking with your vet for distance especially when your rattie is still in a growth stage. But after you are cleared there, I can't think of a better way to bond with your dog.
