Of course they will still carry the crap, as well.
I was in Petco today buying bully sticks when I decided to search for some decent dog food. A man saw me scanning the aisles and asked if he could help. I asked if they carried Blue Buffalo, Innova, or Canidae, and he said they didn't, but that Canidae is scheduled to come in within the next few months, and Blue Buffalo and Innova are scheduled to arrive just after the Canidae. Apparently no one wants to buy anything made by Nutro after the big scare, and I don't blame them.
I'm pretty excited. I cannot consistantly seem to find any of the foods I want the dogs to eat, and hopefully Petco will keep them stocked well so I know I can go to one place, all the time, and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the dang food I want will be there!
I'd sooner pay $60 for a giant bag of something good for them as opposed to $40 for a giant bag of crap with a "designer" name on it. Eukanuba my foot. I feel like I may as well just buy a giant sack of Ol' Roy and let them chow down. |

Edit - the guy said Blue Buffalo was a quality food, but I didn't research that before I posted it and probably should have, seeing as how I've had no experience with the stuff. It could consist of 100% chicken beaks for all I know! |

I know it. Even the smell of it is enough to make me gag. I wouldn't feed the stuff to the devil himself....

That's great! It means that more people are really starting to care about what they feed their dogs. I just switched off Canidae...I didn't even try the new formula. I was going to get a small bag and see how they do on it, but when I went to the feed store the other day, they only had the big bags of the new stuff...I guess everyone else had the same idea. |

| That's cool...they had Solid Gold and Natural Balance for a while...good to hear they're getting more in. Maybe they'll even get Nature's Variety some day - that would be cool because they have a program where you buy 10 bags and get one free. |

I just went to Petco his last weekend and they had an awesome selection of high end foods. I ended up getting some Natural Balance because they seem to truly keep non-wanted ingrediets out of their mix. So far, picky Kiddah seems to really like their dry Lamb and Brown Rice but is kinda poopooing their Duck and Rice wet food. My other pups love all of it |

I always go to Petco to buy their food...I buy Natural Balance (which is one of the higher quality foods). Good to see that they're bringing in more of a choice , but I'm gonna stick to NB. My dogs love it and that makes me happy, because I know that they aren't getting junk and rather a healthy diet!! |

We were using Candiae and did buy the new recipe but Sydney started not eating it, Sonic did not care. So I bought Solid Gold and mixed it with the Candiae and Sydney began picking all the Solid Gold out and eat only that. So now I have a tote of Candiae to get rid off. They are eating the Solid Gold now and seem to love it. |

If you find an add with a lower price on anything PETCO will price match!
PetsMart will sometimes.
We take an add in from Pet Club a warehouse type store once a month to PETCO and they match the price on AVODERM for us. Thats $20 off a single bag. PetsMart did it this month. |

That's great! I noticed that their pet food selection seemed to be getting better. They have some pretty good treats as well. It's just to bad that Canidae changed their formulas... I was at Wally World not too long ago and met a friend and we started talking about dog food. She said she was thinking about switching to Nutro. I told her about the Nutro scare, and hopefully she won't get it. She was currently feeding something called Natural Life or something with the word "nature" or "natural" in it's name. I forget what it was called, but I don't think I've ever heard of the stuff before. |

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the Canidae line of food. I started feeding it to Pippin 3 weeks ago and I've noticed that his bowel movements have increased significantly. He only eats about 1 1/2 cups a day and maybe the occasional treat but on average, he has been pooping between 5-7 times a day! I didn't know such a little dog could produce so much. Do you think I should be concerned? I've been meaning to talk to my vet about this but haven't gotten around to it yet. Has anyone else had this problem? |

| First I want to Welcome you to the site. I don't' know any thing about Canidae but I was thinking the same thing about Ivy today. She is on Wellness switching to Kirkland's and man I tell you her dumps are huge for such a little dog. I have not figured out how that can be on such little food. She only has to make deposits 2 times day one in the morning and one at night. I didn't know they could produce that much either!!! My vet says as long as they are normal then don't worry about it. (I already asked) She looked at me like I was crazy! I hope you can post some pictures of you doggie you picture in your profile is so cute!! |

Apparently some people were switching their dogs over to Nutro and their dogs were getting sick. Their dogs started getting diarrhea, were lethargic, were very dehydrated, and either were drinking less or more. When some took their dog off the food, they started to get better, and when they went back on it, they got sick again. Some of them even died. Nutro, or course, is denying that there is anything wrong with their food, despite the numerous complaints. Hello mewchica! Welcome to the site! It could be that you didn't switch him over to the food slowly enough. Or it could be that the Canidae just isn't the right kind of diet for him. They recently changed their formulas, and they aren't as good as they use to be. The new stuff has peas and rice bran in it, and if Pippin has a delicate digestive system it might be causing problems. You might want to try switching him back to his old food and see if that helps. Good luck! |

thank you Emg, for clearing that up for me. everytime i have a question, i seem to get a good answer from you. speaking of the canidae, is the new recipe horrible, or just not as good as it was before? becasue that was what i was planning on using for my puppy, but i heard they changed the formula and people were getting angry? |

Your welcome!
The New formula isn't really 'horrible', and could still be considered a good food, but it's not as good as it use to be. I suppose it really depends on how it effects your dog...I suppose some dogs may do better on it, but I would think most dogs would do better on the old formula. Here's what dogfoodproject.com had to say...
Under the new formulation, Canidae dry foods will no longer be gluten free, due to the addition of barley. If you know that your dog is gluten intolerant, start shopping around for a different food.
Even if your dog doesn't have problems with gluten (not all do, and many foods do contain high-gluten grains like barley), the change in formulation to include rice bran and peas may contribute to gas and digestive upset. Dogs who aren't particularly sensitive may not have any problems at all, others will get over it within a few days of transitioning, but again, for individuals with a delicate digestive system, expect that they may no longer tolerate the product.
Millet is generally well tolerated, but again, it doesn't work for every dog.
"Diversifying" ingredients may sound catchy, and Canidae certainly has made an effort to put a positive spin on it in their statement, but please remember that not all dogs do well on foods that include a wide variety of items.
Also note that "Herring Meal" will be replaced by generic "Ocean Fish Meal", meaning the company reserves the possibility to use different fish from batch to batch without having to change the ingredient list. This has not been addressed in their statement at all.
Whether these changes are indeed an improvement, as Canidae claims, is for you to decide - after observing how it affects your dog.
