Okay So,

Me and my hubby were sitting, watching a movie. My Hubby was eating M & M's. and low and behold I hear dink, dink.. I freaked out and got up and tried to find the light. of course i was to late minnie grabbed both m &m's and took off down the hall. hopping like a little bunny. and had alreadt chewed both of them up.i WAS SO MAD AT MY HUBBY! I told him if he dropped one more i was going to crate him. so we watched then end of the movie, which was about 10 minutes.  My hubby took both the girls out in our back yard. ( 11:30pm monday).  when the girls came back in,minnie throw up, mostly her dinner.so i figured well the m &m's are back out....then about 2 minutes later, i noticed minnie rubbing her face on me, so i checked her face and it was SWELLING!  and she had welts everywhere! so i showed my hubby and we both ran for the doggie first aid kit, but we had forgotten to get a new bottle of benadryl! just two days before we throw all the expired stuff out and made a list of what to get. grrr i was so upset and minnie was just sitting on the couch with a face the size of a pug, looking at us, like please help me! I'll never eat m&m's again! So we call the ER animal hospital, they were busy. so we went to CVS and got benadryl, non alcohol non flavor , plain benadryl. and went to the counter, no one was there it looked like some robbed them. I walked up and down to isles and no one! so i started yelling "HELLO" ANYBODY WORK HEAR! a lady came out and said someone is in front of you, you'll have to wait. (I wanted so badly to just put the money on the counter and walk out!)  finally the lady came out and paid for her stuff, they took there time laughing and joking. and finally the cashier rang me up and started asking a million questions.Do you know the other one is on sale? I need this one! so is your kid sick or what?? i just looked at her and said " something like that can we cut this short? . forever and a day later, i came out my hubby was at the curb with the door open! we rushed home, which takes us 2 minutes, cause we live right down the street. and I gave minnie the benadryl. and we got in the truck and drove to the ER hospital. they were so busy, so we sat in the truck with the a/c on max for her, it was 103 at 12pm. sucked. we went to the gas station next door and got cold water bottles and ice. and wrapped her face in a cold towel, which she LOVED. we must have been out there for an hour.the swelling went downabout 20 minutes later. and she drank a bunch of water. finally minnie needed to pee so my hubby walked her around and  she started to act like typical minnie. smelling everything in site and barking at shadows. she seemed a lot better, welts were gone and swelling went down alot. so we went home. I got up every 2 hours and checked on her. she was kinda mad cause i kept waking her up. I called the vet the next morning before she even put her key in the door to her office and  told her what happened, she said " well i guess the m&m won" . that's a hard way to learn that your dog is allergic to chocolate. I just said ya i guess so, but at least we didn't end up paying the $200 walk in fee at the Animal hospital. but i would have. so now  minnie is fine now, she had two days of benadryl and is happy and back to normal. thank god we know to use benadryl!

I just wanted to share we you all, sorry if i took up to much of your time..

I guess they can be allergic to chocolate but you do know that chocolate is toxic to dogs, right?  There's a couple of posts over in the Health Forum on chocolate toxicity.....the dark chocolate is really toxic for them!

yeah, i knew chocolate was bad for dogs too, but that's so scarry for two little m&m's!
i know I certainly couldn't survive with a chocolate allergy though

wow! I'm glad she's okay. are you sure it was the m&m's? you said she had just come back in from outside before she threw up and her face started to swell, so it could have been an insect bite...

you know i thought about that to, are vet said it was most likely the chocolate though. so i didn't argue. we go out with them, but you know how ratties are. Im not going to give her another m&m to find out though, lol and we though maybe a snake but we looked everywhere and didn't find anything plus no bite markes, and i looked her over really good and didn't find a insect bite or anything.....
