I LOVE PLAYING FETCH WITH DAISY AND SHE LOVES TO RUN AND CHASE THE BALL...IT'S SO MUCH FUN...HERE'S THE PROBLEM:  SHE LOVES TO CHASE, BUT I NEED TO BE ALPHA FEMALE AND SHE NEEDS TO PLAY BY MY RULES.  I LITERALLY FEEL WE ARE IN A POWER STRUGGLE OVER WHO MAKES THE RULES.  HER RULES:  SHE LOVES TO CHASE THE BALL BUT WANTS ME TO WANT IT (SHE TEASES ME BY  LAYING IT DOWN & THEN TAKING IT BACK WHEN I GO TO PICK IT UP.  OVER & OVER AGAIN!!!  I THINK THAT'S MORE FUN FOR HER THAN THE ACTUAL CHASE.  HERE IS WHAT I HAVE TRIED:  tELLING HER TO DROP IT AND PRAISING HER WHEN SHE DOES & GIVING HER A TREAT.  THAT WORKED FOR A WHILE, THEN SHE WOULD JUST DROP THE BALL HALF WAY TO ME AND JUST WANT THE TREAT AND WOULD FORGET ABOUT THE BALL. I TRIED TURNING MY BACK AND SHE WOULD DROP IT AND I WOULD PRAISE HER.  I THEN TOOK 2 SQUEEKY TOYS OUT AT ONCE SO SHE WOULD COME TO ME DROP IT B/C SHE ALWAYS WANTS WHAT SOMEONE ELSE WANTS MORE THAN WHAT SHE HAS.  THIS WORKED GREAT FOR A WHILE THEN SHE WOULD JUST DROP THE BALL IN MID FETCH AND WANT THE ONE I HAD OR SHE WOULD PASSIVE-AGRESSIVELY DROP THE BALL BUT NOT RIGHT NEXT TO ME SO I HAD TO MOVE TO GET IT THEN SHE WOULD SNATCH IT UP AGAIN  ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

My Daisy does the exact same thing. Some times she will drop it and let me pick it up, but usually she just teases me with it. Let me know if you find out what we're doing wrong. My Daisy will be 8 mos old on the 30th.

Yikes, Peggy, no pearls of wisdom for us thus far...surely we're not the ONLY ONES.  Any tips, Anyone?    Anyone?   Anyone?  Bueller?

I'm not giving up hope, I KNOW someone out there has some fabulous tips, they just haven't found this thread yet...

mine play with eachother more than me...when I want the toy they have, I grab it while its in their mouth and say drop it....ive never had an issue....now Trixi DEFINITLY does this with Toa....she will bring a toy over to him, drop it in front of him ...then grab it and run away...LOL...it cracks me up!

I have tried the "grab it and say drop it" method, too (I'm so jealous it worked for you) Daisy doesn't give it up and I don't want to physically hurt her to take it away (that's how tenacious she is!!)...

When she comes to you and drops the ball... put your foot on it. Praise her... give her a treat. Lean down .. pick up the ball and do it again.

Chloe always did the same thing, and I don't know but maybe (from the pics) some of yours are younger and it may be partly due to age? But I found that just being consistant and insisting that she drop the ball right at me in order for me to keep playing with her is what finally trained her to drop it when told- and lots of praising when she did it right! If she drops it 2- 3 ft away, I say "uh, uh (or no) bring the ball." If she walked away, I'd tell her "Chloe, get the ball" as soon as she had it back in her mouth I'd say "good girl! bring the ball"! and as soon as she got within a foot of me I say "drop it!" As soon as she does "good girl!!" I just kept repeating and repeating, and always praising when she did what was asked, but didn't play anymore if when she didn't.

Now, she not only fetches the ball but drops it on command too right at my feet. Oh, and I pointed to where I want her to drop it too. On occasion she wants to snatch it from me as I'm reaching for it, but I tell her to "leave it" and that usually does the trick. If she's feeling extra persistant, I put my foot on it before she can get it away and tell her again to leave it. I think the key is to just be consistant and repetitive with this exercise -they'll get it! Have fun. It's really great when they get it and they're happy that they "got it"

That's exactly what I did with Button, Nora.  Button played the "tease" game, too.  Now, at age 4, she has learned that if she doesn't bring the ball to me and drop it in my lap or at my feet, I won't pick it up and toss it again.  When I don't immediately grab it, she rears back on her hind legs, front paws curled down (kinda like a horse does on two legs) and barks to get me to throw it again.  Silly girl.

I usually teach fetch with 2 of the same toys (two balls or two crunch n crackle canvas toys or two canvas frisbees). I throw one, the dog fetches it and as the dog turns to look at me and starts to head back I make the other toy "interesting" (wiggle it, toss it in the air, crunch the bottle in the crunch). Usually teh dog will come back with the other toy but not immediately give it up. I will not throw toy number two until toy number 1 gets dropped (preferrably near me but at first I take what I can get). It usually just takes one session like this for about 20 mins for the dog to figure out the game. LMK if this makes sense.

Gwacie,

that is what I tried w/2 squeeky toys...they are her FAVORITE.  It worked for a while and was a blast...then she would see the other ball and drop the one she had before she made it back to me (SEVERAL feet away).  she is then so fixated w/the one I have she doesn't want the one she was supposed to bring me.  She is roughly 1 1/2 years old...so it's not a young puppy thing...

I hide the second behind my back til she brings the first back to me- see if that works for Daisy?

Ok so instead of squeaking the second toy right away, when she goes to get the first, as she gets it turn adn walk away and see if she follows you with it. Eventually I work up to having them sit before I will throw the toy but that can take a bit depending on how geeked the dog is.

Also when the game starts to fizzle or fail (she stops doing her part) then stop playing that game and maybe try another? Short attention span theatre...
