 Rattie

Hello! This is a GREAT page! I've never used a forum before,so lol..I hope I post this right.
We just adopted our rattie on Saturday from a rescue group,I couldn't be happier! She's 6 months old,and already had some training.
We had a 14 year old spaniel that passed away last year,so it's been a while since there's been a pup around!
We have 2 indoor spayed cats, that were used to being with our dog that passed. This is where we are having some troubles.
When we 1st brought Annabelle(our rattie)in,we gently intorduced her to the one cat,the cat hissed but everything seemed ok. A while later, the pup got away from me and she chased the cat, before I could catch her,she chased her again. Now the cat is SCARED of her,and won't come out of the window-Poor thing! We are trying to slowly introduce them from a distance again, get them used to seeing each other, the problem is that Annabelle starts whinning, screaching and barking because she wants the cat, which in turn scares the cat more! The other cat won't even come into the same room as the pup.
Annabelle is already crate trained, and so at night we put her to bed,but we are having to cover the back of her crate, because if she sees the cats walk by she starts whinning, barking, and schreaching.
I want Annabelle to get used to the house, but we are having to keep her in just the one room so she won't chase the kitties...
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you,and glad I found this website-It's already answered a few of my other questions!

When I introduced Ivy to my cat Heidi I made sure the pup was really tuckered out and I mean a ton of play and walking so she didn't scare my kitty to death with rattie enthusiasm. They are getting a long now as long as Heidi can get away when Ivy is being to playful. I am even getting the cat at the baseball cage to slowly get use to her in that same way. Good luck. I hope to see a picture of Annebelle soon!!!! We love pictures!!!! Welcome to the site I just joined a few weeks ago and have a 15 week old rattie girl!!! The people here are great!!! |

| My cats were already dog savvy when I brought Daisy home, but since she was a little pup, the cats outweighed her and let her know what they would and would not tolerate (and still do) but they really get along very well. My male cat and Daisy will even play "box" and chase. And the female cat will sometimes "clean" Daisy which results in poor Daisy standing very, very still and looking confused - LOL. |

| I had cats when I brought Lucy in. I put a child's gate in the hallway to offer a safe place for the kitties but also give them a chance to be in the living room and bedroom with us as they worked to get used to Lucy. It took a couple of weeks, but Lucy stopped chasing the kitties when she realized she couldn't get down the hall to continue the chase. Now they all stay in our living room and bedroom with us. |

| Here is some advice..........I hope it helps........I recently had kitten and puppies born with in weeks of eachother.........Rst terriers love to chase anything so that is what she will do unless you correct it......another cure is to let the cat have his way......my cats scratched my 7 month old just once and now she knows when to stay away.......They have to get used to the smell and sound of eachother so I would suggest taking a piece of material that your cats have laid on and put it into the pups pen so she knows that the cats are part of the pack. Also if you can hold both of the animals...or some one hold the cat while you hold the pup and sit about 2-5 feet from eachother and keep them both calm and do this for a few days........but remember to switch animals so that your very smart pup will know that they are all ok,,,,,,,,,,, |

| Welcome to the site! You'll love this place. Sorry I can't advise on the cat issues. I haven't had a cat since I was in college, and I won't even say how many years ago THAT was. LOL |

Thank you all so much, especially for the welcomes! Thank you for the advice too! Kitties are something I know a lot more about then dogs. We've had quite a few cats, but only one dog..and well we got her when I was in the 5th grade,so not to much training on my part Things are calming a little more between Annabelle and the kitties,so hopefully it'll keep going in a positive direction. I've been bitting my nails worrying! I never even knew Rat terriers existed until I saw her at the pet adoption, and I feel in love with her! I was getting worried that maybe the breed wasn't good with cats, but on every website I've found it says they are. So it was nice to get input from ppl who are experienced with ratties. Today Annabelle and our Siamese looked at each other through the gate and stayed pretty calm, until the cat decided to leave, then Annabelle got excited. RattyTatty,That was a great link,I had been looking for something like that but it hadn't come up in my searches. DaisysMom,My cats really did well with our dog that passed, and I'm hoping that in no time they'll be playing and loving each other. Glad to see yours get along! Lucy's Mom,When I saw your avatar,I called my husband in and said "see Siamese cats and ratties can get along!" dtls224,Thank you that is really good advice. I rubbed some hair from the cats brush on the dog and I think that might have helped some. I will try putting a blanket of the cats in her crate tonight. P.s. All yours dogs are SO cute,I can see why pics are so loved on this site! |

| My avatar picture is a couple of years old but Lucy and the siamese (Casey) are still good friends -- as long as Casey doesn't try to penetrate the mommy zone when Lucy is snuggling beside me. |

My ratties get along fine with our cats, although our oldest cat (11) gets pretty disgusted when the puppy tries to play with her. Magic's gotten batted a couple of times. Unfortunately, it doesn't phase her much. Welcome to the site. I haven't been on it long, but there are some really nice people and some very good information. My husband got me involved with Ratties. He was desolate when his old dog died. I kept trying to get him interested in another dog. He'd always talked about the Rat Terrier he'd had as a kid, so when a saw puppies in the local paper, I got him to go look at them. The rest is history. Ratties's are like potato chips. No one can have just one. |
