 Rattie

I have been reading this website for a long time now and really love all the info. This is my first post.
So I went to work (my first week) and took my break. A woman came in and sat down and started talking to me. Then we got on the subject of dogs. She proceeded to tell me about her dog a 6 mo old male puppy, that she is allergic to. She said she can't get the humane society to take him, has posted it in the paper, can't find anyone by work of mouth. SO, she is just going to put him out on the road. (Mind you we are in Minnesota and it is starting to get cold) So of course I asked what kind and she said rat terrier. My heart broke.
So I talked to her about options and every one I gave she had an excuse or reason not to. So I said, well you can't put him out. She said there was nothing else she could do. So I broke, I'll take him.
So now I am getting this puppy on Friday, Sept 21. Questions: Are there any resources to get the beginner things done? I.e. spaying, shots, check up, etc. I'm not for sure if I want a puppy, especially since I am living in a 1 bed room apartment with my hubby. I already have 2 dogs, a rattie and the other is a mix, maybe she's corgi? Who knows what the other one is. What is it going to be like adding a 3rd? I guess my biggest fear is that I'm going to fall in love with this pup and then find it a home. Or never find it a home and just keep it and never move ever again until we actually buy a home. I mean what land lord takes in 3 dogs (except the one we have now)? Especially when the rattie is so excited when meeting new people in its own home. (Thats a whole other issue.)
Sorry for the novel. Anyone? Help?
P.S. The picture to the left is my Tinker Bell, not the puppy. She's for keeps! |

You are a saint for taking in that puppy. You literally saved his life. You say you get him on Friday, Sept. 21. Do you mean Friday, Sept. 26? We love pictures You should sign up with Ratbones and their GAP program, which basically means you foster the dog until a home is found. They put the baby on their Web site and handle adoption inquiries. You should contact them at ratbonerescues@yahoo.com -- the web site is ratbonerescues.com. They are a great group. Please keep us posted. As for spaying and neutering help, I did a quick search and saw this: 1. http://www.friendsofanimals.org/programs/spay-neuter/index.html -- to get a certificate and 2. Programs I could find. MINNESOTA Spay, Neuter, Aid Program (SNAP) Contented Critters PO Box 385 Makinen, MN 55763 218-638-2153 Low cost spay/neuter for pets of qualified low income people. WOW, thank you so much! I already e-mailed ratbones. But I'm so afraid I'm going to fall in love and not want to give him up and they have a clause that you can't keep the dog. But, I've never met this dog and he may not get along w/my dogs anyway. We just don't know! I'm trying not to worry myself with these deatils. Don't panic Laura, don't panic. Haha The locations of the programs are several hours away from where we live. I work 2 hours even further south and those locations are WAY north. I looks like Makinen is in Canada (jk). With gas prices I'm afraid it won't be cost effective. I am going to call my local vet (love them) tomorrow and see if they have some assistance. And to schedule at least a check up/shots/vaccinations/heartworm and see what they recommend for the "fix." I mean, if we knew we were getting a dog we would save up for these things, but with it being only 1 week, I mean....geeze. Anyway, I REALLY appreciate the info and your help! I would have never thought of searching for those programs or spay/neuter clinics, or the certificate stuff. Woulda never thought o that |

Well, first of all welcome to our rattie family! Lots of great helpful people on here! Sure do thiank you for rescuing this pup.....I would say take him in, see how it goes the first few days and then based on that decide if you think he will fit into your "group" that you already have.....if not, then maybe sign up for the rescue group mentioned above and they are quite good at finding homes for these guys..... Take care and good lucik! Lynn |

We're so glad that you're saving this pup. The Guardian Assistance Program sounds like a good bet for you. As for not getting attached... not sure what to tell you. I think all foster moms get attached a little bit. But just tell yourself from the start that it's not your dog, that you're not keeping him/her... you will probably get attached anyway, but at least from the start you won't be entertaining ideas of "maybe I can keep this one"... And I totally understand the landlord thing. I have just the one animal of my own for that reason. I'm living with my parents, but hope to move out in the near future but would need a roommate. I know if I got another, while most landlords that allow pets will allow two, almost none allow three. And if I find a roommate who is okay with my rattie, likely they'd have an animal of their own. It's very responsible of you to think about the future. What if your landlord sold the place and you were evicted or something? (that happened to a friend of mine once. She did nothing else wrong, but a new landlord isn't necessarily tied to your agreement). Bless you for saving the little rattie! |

So update on puppers. He is way bigger than my lil Tinker Bell already! I swear he looks like he is mixed with a beagle. I thought I had a home for him but the people seemed disappointed with his size. He is a calm, chilled dog. He really did not know what to do with TinkerBell. I really left it up to her to pull him out of his shell. It took, oh, about 1 minute and 23 seconds before they were romping and playing. SO, I take the puppy to the vet tomorrow. He has had NO shots. Unbelievable. When I met the owner she stepped out of her vehicle, handed me the dog, said thank you, got back in her car and drove away. It was a 30 second encounter and here I was holding this puppy that was way bigger than I expected (so the collar I bought was too small and she didn't buy one b/c hers was to small and she didn't bother b/c she was getting rid of him) So now I'm borrowing a collar til I get to Target again. P.S. Lucy's mom, or anyone who wants to donate (considering neutering is $200 much less shots) I will be going to At Home Animal Clinic in Stillwater, MN. Phone # 651-351-7387 my initials are LB so hopefully that is enough information. Let me know if it is not. Appointment for shots is at 9:00 am tomorrow. After that we'll have to see what to do about the neutering. That is a bigger chunk of money, and a necessary procedure. I think we'll have to save up for that one. |

Hello -- I was thinking about you earlier today, wondering if you got the puppy. I'm delighted to donate the money. I doubt the initials will be enough. If you don't want to put your full name on the site, how about sending it to me in an e-mail at ebaym62news at bellsouth dot net. Will it be OK if I call Monday? I'd also be happy to send you a check directly to you, if you'd like. You decide. |

| I thought I had a family for him but they respectfully declined stating that he was too large. He weighs 20.5 pounds and from toe to ear is 18-19" high (rough estimate). I'm trying to get the word out if anyone wants him. I think he is a beagle rattie mix. I'll give him for the same amout I personally put into him. |

| I am near the twin cities and I drive down to Albert Lea. Believe me, he's cheap! I'm only going to sell him for what I actually pay for out of pocket, so basically the person purchasing would only pay what he would already pay at the vet! Lemme know where he is, maybe we could arrange a pick up point. I am also really trying to advertise him at our church. I think I have a couple of families interested So let me know as soon as possible. |

Click on the icon at the top of this box that looks like it has mountains and a sunrise. IN the place where you see browse server, you will need to paste the link to the picture into that and click OK.
You will need to save the picture in Photobucket or something first...
If you know how to attach a pic into email, email it to me at ashley.lesniewski@yahoo.com. I will post it up for you.
