I believe some shelters use the promise of a refund of some of the adoption fees when you come back with proof from a vet that the dog has been spayed/neutered as a way of doing their best to guarantee that a dog will be "fixed". Many still do not perform spaying or neutering on dogs under a certain age (5-6 mos.) and, again, use the above method or discount certificates with certain vets to encourage dog owners to have it done. Many of our local pounds do not spay and neuter, or do any vetting for that matter. Dogs are not there long enough Here they have 72 hours max and the predominating theory is "why bother if they're going to be put down", or in the alternative, adopted, which then makes all the medical care, etc., the 'problem' of the new owner. Of course, I don't think it's right, that's just the way it still is in a lot of places. More's the pity.

It makes me sad these dogs have had such a hard life already. I hope the new owners all do right by them.

I just read a post by a person who adopted one of the puppy mill ratties. They seem very nice. It is on this site under the Puppy Mill crisis averted I think. Anyway, they said they stood in line over 2 hours, then did paper work and as soon as they got their female dog, they took her to their vet and then to their groomers to have her nails clipped and worked on.

She said that the ratty was asleep on the carpet in the den at her hubby's feet and they were so looking forward to giving her a good life and that she had never seen so many animal lovers as were at the shelter today.

It is so hard not to worry, but I am sending lots of positive energy and thoughts out to the universe that the folks who adopted have the interest of the dogs at heart.

As someone said, some may return or they may not, but at least the dogs have a chance today. Until we get the world to realize that there needs to be some type of affordable spay/neuter programs for folks to use, that animal shelters, county pounds, even humane societies MUST be funded by county, state, federal dollars at TRUE costs AND that each township, municipality, etc needs to adopt strong correct and viable and enforcable prdinances, rules and regs for animals with enough staff to do the job and with funds set aside for Humane Education that starts in the early childhood years and continues without interruptions through adulthood then I'm afraid shelters will be over full with under paid and under sized facilities.

Education is a main key in helping folks see what should be common sense in animal ownership and care.

We are all Humane Educators. Even if all we do is take excellent care of our animals, then we are showing the world what responsible animal care is all about. If we are able to talk to folks and answer questions or help someone learn something, even better. And if you really want to get involved, check with you local town, city, county etc commisioners, your local shelter, humane society, etc and offer to volunteer some teaching time in the schools.

There is some awsome curriculum out there and it is easy to learn and reproduce from a teaching point of view.

OKay, hopping off the soap box now!! (Can you tell I was a Humane Education Director for years?)

I hope we can encourage as many of the folks who adopted to come to boards like this one and others and join and be part of our conversations, etc. It would be awesome to be able to follow some if not all of these wonderful dogs and pups and they embark on their new lives.

At our shelter, the animals aren't spayed/neutered until you adopt-- but you don't get to take them home until they are. So like with Sophie, I picked her out on a Thursday and picked her up on a Monday (actually Sophie was spayed before she was turned in, but she needed her teeth cleaned and they put the spay/neutered part of her fee towards that instead). But it would have been the same time frame if she'd gotten spayed.
