I am SOOOO happy to hear about this!! God is great and provides just when it's needed. Of course I wanna know who adopted the little blue and white baby that was in cage with two other precious pups. (from Sherri's pics) I had ALMOST convinced Kev to drive up there and get that baby for me!!! LOL!! This situation is definitely proof that there are still angels among us. |

This is just so fantastic. I expected lots of support from the community when the story broke, but to have adopted them all is overwhelming. And, like most, I think that there may be some returns, but also agree that at least for now they get to to be with a family and warm and safe and definitely better off than where they were. And, since this shelter is now really familiar with the rat terrier rescue organizations, I'm sure if they need to, they now know who to call. CBaugh: I'm so glad you found our site and that you were moved to adopt one of these ratties Welcome! If you need any help at all --- just ask. Also, if you know of any other locals who adopted and may need advice and tips on raising a rat terrier and how to perhaps overcome some issues that may come with a puppy mill rescue, please let them know of this site. Everyone here will extend a hand to help these dogs make the transition from mistreated property to beloved member of a family We are very active and responses are almost always immediate. Can't wait to see some pics of your new addition!!! |

I cannot belive how much the dog in the picture looks like nora--coloring markings and even expression It brougth tears to my eyes---but I need to belive that they are very resileint and they said that the pup settled down immidatley in the new owners arms and I could see by the smile on her face that her spirit was completley intact. I think It says so much for this breed that they went through an ordeal like this and were still so appealing that they could not be resisited! |

My uncle lives in Charlotte and this story got a lot of coverage there. He said just about everyone he knew and/or talked to were just livid about the puppy mill and are furious that it took so long to get local authorities to act. So it seems being located in a good area to reach several cities, etc. and that folks were/are animal lovers, that is part of the reason for the turn out. I hope that maybe the animal shelter/the Catawba Humane Society/Ratbone and New Rattitude can work together in about 6 months to host a "reunion" get together for all the adoptees and their families. I know that area just got a new dog park and wouldn't that be wonderful to see them all in 6 months and see how much better they all are!!?? |

I know I will be fostering from the PM NC bust , a 10 year old mom with a baby and a 9 month old girl and a prego girl. there was about 8 that ratbone rescues took custody of. I can not wait until they arrive. I have never had a puppy mill foster, But I look forward to taking in those broken dogs and making them whole and adoptable again. I love babies. Thanks for all the help Sherri Chatterson you have been these dogs savior. I hope alot of rat rescues offered you help and are also taking some of these guys that were not at the adoption clinic. I know the vet at the shelter kept a bunch that were to sick to be adopted from being on the floor that day. I can not wait. Thanks Michelle Culbertson Application Manager Ratbone Rescues New York |

Michelle: Bless you for helping out. I don't have any first hand knowledge of adopting or fostering a puppy mill dog, but I would imagine that there will be some issues such as fear of people perhaps, and complete nonsocialization that will have to be worked on slowly. I'd guess the 10 year old momma and the other pregnant female will likely be comfortable if they have an "escape" place like a crate especially since your personal dogs are likely to be excited to have company and want to play and what-not and these puppy mill dogs may just have no idea of what's going on I'm sure with lots of time and patience, they will slowly come around. If you read Cheryl's post about her puppy mill rescue, Taffy, I think you'll get a good idea of what you might expect. |

Kudos Michelle for opening your home (and heart ) to those poor babies!
Also....Connie (wordweaver) too!!
MB,( Mitzy's Mom) is also going to be fostering one or two of the girls, so bet you ALL can put your heads together on any issues as they crop up!
In fact...it would be great to see a Pup Mill Support Group forum formed...since they are a unique psychological & physical situation. Be interesting to see how many similar traits/issues they share, and ideas as well as successes in their growth from everyone....just a thought.

| I think I'm getting the "house dog", one of the dogs that lived inside the house of the puppy millers. From what I've heard she isn't as unsocialized as the breeding dogs....which is good as I don't have any puppy mill dog experience. The other girl I may get is a little teddy who was a stray and not part of the puppy mill but was found by Sherri's father. |

Sorry for the delayed response - was gone all day.
Michelle, the best advice I can give you for the initial week or so is to let them be. Don't try to push them at all, let them stay in their hideouts in the quietest part of the house where they can acclimate to household noises and activity but feel somewhat safe. Avoid looking directly at them, and when you approach them, turn your body sideways. You may have to spill them out of their crates to potty and eat. I kept a slip lead on mine (can't do that with Mama of course) and when I got them out of the crates I grabbed the lead & took them outside. My Dodge wouldn't budge so I kept pads & papers down for him. Still do, although he will go outside now. He also couldn't be crated so I kept him in an X-pen with newspapers, and put a sheet over the top so he could hide. Everyone progressed in the second week.
Speak softly. These dogs are on sensory overload, and load noises scare the bejesus out of them.
I'd guess that the mom with the one pup will be extra nervous as she has to protect herself AND the baby. Do you have an X-pen or huge cage that you can put her in so she won't need to leave the baby to potty & eat?
Yes, I've been worried about the moms who got rabies shots in mid-pregnancy. Hopefully the pups weren't harmed but to be honest, I've been afraid to research it.
If you want to email me when you get the dogs, don't hesitate. I'll help you all I can. Those of us who have PM dogs already trade tips and share updates so I've got lots of useful info tucked away.
Good luck ~ |

Hey MB,
Yes, the Teddies are going to you! Both great girls from what Sherri told me. Lucky you, I have "B Fever" too & would have snatched them up but I've got to take more mill dogs. Maybe we can swap when mine are ready to graduate to another foster home. Fat chance, right? |

Hey all,
Not sure what route the doggies are taking down from NC into Georgia and Florida....that's being worked out now. I imagine I'll intercept my 2 as they travel through Georgia on either I75 or I95....then the others will travel on into Florida to Connie and Janie.
And Connie, how about I spoil those teddys rotten and then we'll trade? LOL Seriously, you know I'll switch with you later on if you want to move one of the PM kids when they graduate, I need to learn to take care them, too.

| Wonderful advice Connie. The little 9month old girl should be coming to me. I am so excited and eager to help her. Any more advice would be wonderful! I have a crate and a pen, would I be able to do what I did with my boys as pups and put the crate in the pen and let her have that area all to herself? I am thinking if I cover it like onnie said and have potty pads she should feel more comfortable. So many questions on PM dogs! I guess I will see how badly she was affected when she comes : ) |
