I've been looking and researching many rat terrier breeder websites lately -- not just the few in Tennessee.

How can a person tell from looking at a website whether or not the breeder is a reputable breeder who breeds for the betterment of the breed rather than just for money?

It can be mind boggling to those of us who are less educated about this breed in general.

Personally I look for testing, prices & titles. If they have a $500 dog that hasnt had any testing or even set foot in the show ring more than likely in it for money. I also look for sizes, are they 'toys'? If they are toys I dont consider it bettering the breed because I feel like they are trying to 'recreate' the toy fox terrier. How are the dogs kept, are they in disgusting lots, scared to death, filthy in the photos? not someone I want to deal with. You can see a dog's general characteristics from a photo, a picture is worth a 1000 words right? Does the dog have a poor profile? Look to be bow legged? things like that.

The next thing to do would be to just talk to the people. See how much information they can provide you. If they cant provide you any information on their dogs beyond the dog themselves then dont even bother unless you want to take a gamble. Don't get me wrong, I have found 'diamonds in the rough' and I know others that have too but remember you are taking a gamble. Heck, even on breeders that can be labeled reputable sometimes you are taking a gamble. You have to figure out yourself how far you are willing to reach to get what you want.

example:
I found a pretty nice bitch from untested, unproven, and not the best conditions a dog could be in. Had I have gotten her younger I would have shown her instead i tested her and she came out clean so bred her to one of my males and had a VERY nice litter! I am keeping two puppies back to watch develop while the others were placed in pet homes so I could watch them develop and keep a close watch on anything that might pop up from the dam's side that went undiscovered. If nothing does pop up I shall show the puppies i kept and may do a repeat breeding in the future. I feel the breed is too new to limit ourselves to 'what we know'. My first rat terrier was a stray and I feel he represented the breed well, he is my reason for continuing this breed's legacy.

I shall stop rambling now, but hope that helps a lil bit. Really is it up to the one person on what they can handle and what they dont want to deal with.
good luck
